Nevada DMV Guide
Easy steps and key info to get your Nevada license and registration done right and on time.

๐ Step 2 โ Register Your Vehicle
Order of operations โ do these in sequence:
Get Nevada auto insurance first โ Nevada's DMV checks insurance in real time through the LIVE system. Out-of-state insurance is NOT accepted.
Get a smog check โ Required in Clark and Washoe Counties for vehicles 2+ model years old. Cost: $20โ$45, takes 15 minutes at any licensed emissions station.
Get a VIN inspection โ Free at the DMV, or $25โ$50 at a third-party agency. Mobile VIN inspections available.
Title and register your vehicle at a Nevada DMV office or licensed third-party agency.
What it costs: Title fee ($28.25) + base registration ($33+) + Governmental Services Tax (~4% of your vehicle's depreciated MSRP) โ the biggest line item. Budget $200โ$600 total depending on your vehicle's value.
Nevada law requires new residents to get a Nevada driver's license and register their vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. The clock starts the day you sign a lease, close on a home, enroll your kids in school, or start a Nevada job โ not when you feel settled. Don't wait.
๐ชช Step 1 โ Get Your Nevada Driver's License
What to bring to the DMV:
Your valid out-of-state driver's license
One proof of Social Security number (original SSN card, W-2, or SSA letter)
Two proofs of Nevada residency โ must be two different document types (e.g., signed lease + utility bill, NOT two utility bills)
For Real ID: also bring your original U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
Know before you go: Nevada requires a 25-question written knowledge test for all new residents โ even with a valid out-of-state license. You need 80% to pass. Study free practice tests at this third-party test site FREE Nevada DMV Permit Practice Test, or on the official DMV practice page. License fee: $41.50 (standard, valid 8 years) ยท Seniors 65+: $17.50 (4 years)
